This is a short walkthrough on how to correctly use Goodtools to manage ROMs. Goodtools is an important tool because it will rename your ROMs to the current standard and also check the CRC32 of each ROM file to make sure you have the correct version. In other words if someone decided to change a filename, Super Mario Bros (JU) (PRG 1) to SMB (J), then Goodtools would check the ROM and fix the filename.

Download one of the sets below. We'll use GoodSMS (Sega Master System) in this example. We'll also use the directory C:\SMS. Make sure all ROMs are in C:\SMS unzipped. After downloading GoodSMS extract it to C:\SMS. Open Windows Command Prompt by going to Start -> Run and type cmd. Type in C:\SMS and that's what the prompt should look like. Now type in goodsms.exe and you'll see the intro text. Hit enter and type goodsms rename and Goodtools will start checking and renaming all your ROMs. It will use the SHA-1 by default. If you want to check the ROMs by CRC32 then type in goodsms rename crc32, however checking by SHA-1 is more than adequate.
